I've styled a lot of coffee tables at this point: client homes, my own living room, my sister's place after she begged me to fix hers. And no matter the budget, the same 3 mistakes keep showing up.
The wild part? They're not expensive mistakes. They're arrangement mistakes. Which means the fix is free!
Mistake #1: The "everything must be functional" trap Either your coffee table is buried in remotes and mail, or it's so "usable" it's completely bare. Neither one feels cozy. The fix is my 50/50 Rule: half styled, half functional (and it takes five minutes!)
Mistake #2: The pancake problem Three candles in a row. Books lying flat. Everything the exact same height. It feels safe, but it reads as boring... even with gorgeous pieces. This is where my Triangle Method comes in (tall, medium, low; arranged like a triangle, not a line), and it's the single fastest way to make a table look intentional.
Mistake #3: Matching set syndrome If everything came from the same store, at the same time, in the same finish... it'll always look like it was bought all at once instead of collected over time. The fix is mixing textures: something natural, something smooth, something with a little age or story to it.
I broke down exactly how to fix all three (with real before/afters) in this post →
🔥 This Week's Top Find: Flameless Glass LED Candles (Set of 3)
These are exactly what I mean when I say "add a candle" in the Coffee Table Formula...except you don't have to remember to blow them out, and they're totally safe with kids or pets around! The real-wax look and flickering LED flame reads as the real thing from a few feet away, and the set of 3 (different heights) does double duty: it's your "add a candle" step and a shortcut to the Triangle Method, since they already come in tall/medium/low sizes.
Set a timer, forget about them, and they'll turn on every evening automatically. So affordable for all three, and one of my favourite decor purchases over these last couple of years!
