I was thinking about something this week while doing a very normal, very boring tidy-up.
Most of what keeps our house from feeling totally out of control has nothing to do with big cleans, big projects, or even perfect organization.
It’s a few quiet, unglamorous habits.
Here are some of the ones that make the biggest difference for me:
I try to do a quick (and usually imperfect) reset of the main living areas before bed. Even five minutes makes mornings feel completely different.
I don’t leave a room empty-handed. If I’m walking upstairs or into the kitchen anyway, I grab one or two things that belong there.
I keep one “catch-all” basket for the stuff that doesn’t have a home yet. That way it’s contained instead of slowly spreading everywhere. I have a basket on the stairs that works well for this.
I do a fast surface sweep before I start cleaning anything else. Clear counters and tables make the whole house feel calmer, even if nothing else is perfect.
And I’ve stopped aiming for “done.” I aim for “better than before.”
None of this is impressive. None of it makes a good before-and-after photo.
But together, these are the things that keep the house from little-by-little tipping into chaos.
One of my favourite cleaning hacks from last week's video is dusting fan blades with an old pillowcase!
It actually made me think about last Saturday’s home hacks video, because the hacks are kind of the tools… and these are the habits.
The hacks make things faster and easier. The habits keep things from piling up in the first place.
